Planning Our Trip to Greening Up the Mountains Festival
Debra and I were sitting at the kitchen table, half planning a Saturday list of adventure and half arguing about who “accidentally” finished the last brownie, when we decided: we’re heading to Sylva for the Greening Up the Mountains Festival! We will add it to the High Falls Whitewater Release at 10 am, the Heritage Apple Day Festival in Cashiers, and the Low Rider Truck Show in Maggie Valley. SHEW!!! It’s going to get busy. It’s kind of perfect, honestly. A festival that mixes arts, crafts, food, live music, local breweries, and activities for the kids? Yes, please! Plus, it’s FREE, which means we can save our cash for more important things…like funnel cakes and handmade pottery.
What the Greening Up the Mountains Festival is All About
This isn’t just another street festival with a few booths and a food truck. Greening Up the Mountains has been celebrating the arrival of spring for 27 years! It honors both traditional and modern Appalachian arts, music, and food — bringing the whole community together. Picture this: the streets of Downtown Sylva packed with 150 vendors, the smell of old-fashioned ice cream and fresh barbecue in the air, local musicians jamming from three different stages, kids running around with painted faces, and crafters weaving magic out of wood, yarn, and corn husks. Debra’s already planning her shopping route. I’m already planning my snack route. Priorities, right?
Family-Friendly Fun (and Not Just for the Little Ones)
If you’ve got kiddos (or you’re just a big kid at heart like me), you’re going to love the children’s activities. There’s face painting, storytelling, an inflatable slide, and a bunch more. And for the runners out there — or the people who pretend to like running and then immediately find a food truck afterward (again, me) — there’s the Greening Up the Mountains 5K Run at 9 AM. Budget tip: Pack a few water bottles and snacks for the kids and spend your money on the fun stuff like festival eats and souvenirs!
Music, Food, and Local Brews
One of the coolest things? Live music all day long. Three different stages will have bands, dancers, and even a talent show. You might catch a bluegrass band plucking away or some mountain dancers showing off their moves. And let’s not forget the beverage arts area! Sylva’s local craft breweries will be pouring some of their best, so we’re planning to enjoy a cold one while wandering the festival. (Or two. Or maybe just buy a six-pack to “souvenir” back home. For research purposes, of course.)
Easy Drive and Nearby Towns to Explore
Getting there is simple. From Asheville, just hop on I-40 West, then take 23/74W towards Waynesville, and follow it to Sylva. About an hour drive. Not bad for a day that’s packed with fun and very Instagram-worthy moments. If we have time (and let’s be real, we’re gonna MAKE time), we’ll also swing by Dillsboro or Cashiers — cute spots close to Sylva with their own little adventures. And if you’re feeling ambitious (or just need to walk off all that festival food), don’t miss climbing the stairs to the famous Jackson County Courthouse. It’s one of the most photographed spots in North Carolina — and the perfect place for that “look at us living our best life” photo.
Why Greening Up the Mountains Should Be on Your Spring Bucket List
Whether you’re a family looking for a fun day that won’t break the budget or a couple searching for a romantic spring getaway that’s not just another overpriced spa weekend, Greening Up the Mountains is perfect. Debra and I are counting down the days until we’re walking those historic streets, ice cream in one hand, artisan soap in the other, trying not to lose track of each other in the crowd. (Spoiler: I’ll be the one chasing the funnel cake cart.) See you April 26, 2025, in Downtown Sylva!
