What the Greening Up the Mountains Festival is All About

This isn’t just another street festival with a few booths and a food truck.

Greening Up the Mountains is celebrating its 28th year in 2026, and it has become one of the most popular spring festivals in the North Carolina Smoky Mountains.

Held every April in Downtown Sylva, the festival celebrates the moment when fresh green leaves begin climbing the mountain ridges, a sure sign that spring has arrived.

Family-Friendly Fun (and Not Just for the Little Ones)

If you’ve got kids, or you’re just a big kid at heart, you’ll love the children’s area.

Activities typically include:

  • Face painting
  • Storytelling
  • An inflatable slide
  • Interactive games and activities

And for the runners out there, the Greening Up the Mountains 5K Run kicks off at 9 AM before the festival begins.

Budget tip: Bring water bottles and snacks for the kids so you can spend your money on the fun stuff like festival food and local crafts.

Music, Food, and Local Brews

One of the highlights of the festival is the live music happening all day long.

Three stages around downtown feature local musicians, dancers, and performers bringing Appalachian culture to life.

Bands scheduled for the Bridge Park Stage in 2026 include:

  • Junior Appalachian Musicians – 10:00 AM
  • Bird In Hand – 11:30 AM
  • Fuzzy Peppers – 1:00 PM
  • PMA – 2:30 PM

And let’s not forget the Beverage Arts area, where local craft breweries pour some of their best beers.

We’re planning to grab a cold one while wandering the festival. Maybe two.
