NuWray Hotel’s Rich History: Built Before Burnsville in 1833
The NuWray Hotel was originally constructed in 1833, even before Burnsville itself was founded. After the Civil War, Garrett and Elizabeth Ray took over the property and operated it until their passing in 1912. At that time, it was known locally as “The Old Ray” or Ray’s Hotel. In 1915, when their daughter Julia Ray married William Wray, the couple decided to rebrand the hotel as the NuWray Hotel, marking a new chapter in its long history.

Over the years, the hotel has undergone several expansions and renovations. The east wing was expanded in 1870, adding a Victorian-era touch, while the lobby, dining hall, kitchen, and upstairs guest rooms were enhanced with Colonial Revival elements in the early 1900s.
