French Broad Falls and Mill Shoals
French Broad Falls is a powerful waterfall that drops approximately 80 feet into a large pool at the base. Mill Shoals, on the other hand, is a series of smaller cascades that drop approximately 35 feet in total.
Visitors can access both waterfalls via a moderate hiking trail that is approximately 1.5 miles round trip. The trail winds through the forest and offers beautiful views of the surrounding landscape along the way. At the end of the trail, visitors are greeted with the stunning sight of French Broad Falls and Mill Shoals, which cascade over rocks before pooling at the bottom.
The area around French Broad Falls and Mill Shoals is also popular for fishing, with several spots along the river where visitors can cast a line. There are also several picnic areas near the falls, making it a great spot for a family outing or a romantic picnic.
To get to French Broad Falls and Mill Shoals from Brevard, North Carolina:
- Take US-64 West for approximately 9.3 miles.
- Turn right onto NC-215 North and continue for approximately 5.5 miles.
- Turn left onto Forest Road 140 (also known as FR-140 or Courthouse Creek Road).
- Continue on FR-140 for approximately 3 miles until you reach the trailhead parking area on the right.
The trailhead is well-marked and easy to find. From the parking area, follow the trail for approximately 0.75 miles until you reach French Broad Falls. Continue on the trail for another 0.75 miles until you reach Mill Shoals.
