Debra and I visited Burnsville and nearby Spruce Pine in August 2024, just before Hurricane Helene.
We spent our days exploring the downtowns, hiking toward Mount Mitchell from Black Mountain State Park, and even got an early walkthrough of the newly rebuilt NuWray Hotel before it reopened.
That trip inspired us to put together this fun, kid-friendly itinerary to help your family enjoy an unforgettable visit to Burnsville, NC.

TL;DR: Kid Approved Burnsville Weekend

  • Play and create downtown. Kid-friendly shops, art studios, and playground time keep little ones happy without a long drive.
  • Easy waterfall hikes. Short trails to Setrock Creek Falls and Roaring Fork Falls give kids big views for little effort.
  • Stars, planets, and a giant telescope. Bare Dark Sky Observatory and the Arthur Planetarium bring big sky adventures to families.

Pig & Grits, Appalachian Java, and Homeplace Beer Co. offer hearty meals at reasonable prices.

A Weekend Made for Families

Burnsville is a small mountain town with a big heart and plenty for families to enjoy. Kids can explore toy shops, paint their own art projects, climb at an inclusive playground, and end the night under the stars at one of the best public observatories in the country. Parents will love that everything is close together and affordable.

Day One: Downtown Fun, Toys, and Playtime

Start your morning at Appalachian Java (http://www.appalachianjava.net/). Their sandwiches, salads, and baked goodies make breakfast easy, and shareable portions help keep costs down.

If it’s a Saturday, walk over to the Yancey County Farmers Market (https://www.yanceymarket.org/). Kids can explore handmade soaps, homegrown produce, and local treats.

Next, head to The Bougie Brush (https://thebougiebrush.com/), an open paint studio with projects kids can decorate and personalize. Aprons and cleanup sinks make it stress free for parents.

Just a short walk down Main Street, stop at Monkey Business Toy Shop (https://monkey-business-toy-shop.wheree.com/). It offers new and retro toys adults may remember from childhood. It connects to Something Special Gift Shop, whose
Facebook page is here: https://www.facebook.com/somethingspecialburnsville/.

For lunch, drive a couple of minutes to Pig & Grits (https://www.pigandgrits.com/). Their house-smoked meats and big portions make it easy for a family to share.

Let the kids burn off energy at Kid Mountain, an updated playground beside the Yancey County Public Library. It includes ADA-friendly structures, creative play spaces, and shaded picnic tables.

If your visit lines up with a theater weekend, catch a show at Parkway Playhouse (https://parkwayplayhouse.com/), the oldest continuously operating summer theater in North Carolina.

Parent date-night idea

After bedtime, stroll downtown for a drink at Snap Dragon Bar & Kitchen (https://www.snapdragonbar.com/) or the cozy Roland’s Bar at the NuWray Hotel (https://www.nuwray.com/). Both are easy, casual spots for a relaxing evening.

Day Two: Waterfalls, Mount Mitchell, and Stargazing

Start day two with breakfast and then head to the South Toe River area for two easy waterfall hikes:

  • Setrock Creek Falls – A short 0.75-mile trail with creekside spots kids love.
  • Roaring Fork Falls – A gentle 1.5-mile round-trip walk ending in a long cascade that photographs beautifully.

Both are great for young kids and grandparents.

Afterward, take the scenic drive up to Mount Mitchell State Park, the highest peak east of the Mississippi. The paved summit trail and the Balsam Nature Trail offer cool-air mountain views without long hiking distances.

Back in town, grab lunch or an afternoon treat at Appalachian Java (http://www.appalachianjava.net/) or head to Homeplace Beer Company (https://www.homeplacebeer.com/) for wood-fired pizza and a casual outdoor atmosphere.

In the evening, drive up to the Mayland Earth to Sky Park for two of Burnsville’s biggest attractions:

Bare Dark Sky Observatory

The Bare Dark Sky Observatory offers one of the best stargazing experiences in the Southeast. Located high above Burnsville at the Mayland Earth to Sky Park, it features a custom-built 34-inch research telescope that lets visitors see planets, star clusters, and deep-space objects in incredible detail. Families love the guided sessions, and the dark mountain skies make every visit feel unforgettable.

Arthur Planetarium

The Arthur Planetarium delivers an immersive, educational experience with its full-dome projection system and engaging science shows. Located at the Mayland Earth to Sky Park, it’s a favorite for families thanks to its kid-friendly programs, stunning space visuals, and easy-to-understand presentations about the night sky, planets, and the universe.

If clouds roll in, the planetarium offers immersive sky shows and science films, making this a guaranteed win for families.
