The Village Green in Cashiers, North Carolina, is a picturesque 13.2-acre park that serves as a central gathering place for the community and visitors alike. Located at the crossroads of Highway 64 and Highway 107, it is a hub for a variety of activities and events.

This park boasts a rich array of features, including scenic walking paths, a large children’s playground, and a variety of garden areas. Among these gardens, the Hayes Fairchild Memorial Garden stands out with its stone bench seating and a colorful assortment of annual and perennial plants. The Dahlia Garden is particularly notable as a nationally recognized trial garden. Visitors can also enjoy the park’s eight sculptures, which add an artistic dimension to the natural beauty of the area.

In terms of facilities, The Village Green provides numerous amenities for public enjoyment. There are rustic pavilions, which can be used for gatherings such as picnics, birthday parties, and family reunions. The Gazebo and Event Lawn offer additional spaces for various events. These facilities are complemented by the Village Green Commons, a versatile venue that features an open-air, mountain rustic pavilion and sprawling meadow lawn, suitable for large private occasions and community events.

The Village Green is not just a place for relaxation and leisure; it also plays a significant role in the cultural life of Cashiers. The park hosts a range of events throughout the year. These include Groovin’ On the Green, a free summer concert series, the Fireworks Extravaganza On the Green during the July 4th celebrations, and the Leaf Festival, an annual three-day juried arts and crafts show. Additionally, the Village Green is a site for holiday observances like the Easter Sunrise Service and Cashiers Christmas Tree Lighting.

Beyond entertainment, the park serves as an educational venue with its Village Nature Series, which highlights natural and cultural elements unique to the area. Topics such as raptor and wolf conservation, wildcrafting and foraging, and beekeeping have been featured in these programs.

The Village Green also contributes to environmental conservation through its wetland walk. This boardwalk trail leads into a woodland glade, offering a glimpse of native plant and animal life. This area is especially vibrant in the spring with the blooming of native azaleas.

The Village Green stands as a testament to community effort and passion. It was established in 1992 when three area residents purchased the property to prevent it from becoming a hotel chain site, donating it to a charitable organization for community use. Since then, it has evolved into a beloved public space that maintains the unique mountain lifestyle of Cashiers, enjoyed by thousands of visitors every year.
